Why does change of light make me unsteady?

Nymbl wants you to feel confident when it comes to your balance, both now and in the future. This is the last article in an 11-week educational series about balance improvement and fall prevention. For our final week, we’re discussing why change of light may make you unsteady.

Balance and vision are closely related. In fact, your vision makes up one-third of your balance². This is why you can become unsteady with sudden changes of light; your brain becomes overstimulated, creating the feeling of being blinded.

A great example of feeling blinded by light is when you’re walking or driving and are suddenly hit with a bright wave of sunlight. We’ve all experienced this discomfort, which can leave us unstable and can often be dangerous in many situations. The same is true when you flip on a bathroom light switch in the middle of the night.

To help reduce your risk of falling, include night lights in your house to help your eyes adjust from darker to lighter environments and add balance training into your daily routine.

If you’re struggling with balance or the fear of falling, you are not alone on this journey. At Humana, our goal is to empower you to live a confident and independent life, free from the fear of falling. This is where Nymbl can help. Nymbl is a scientifically-proven¹ approach to fall prevention that makes balance training both fun and effective by combining simple body movements with brain games to challenge your body and mind at the same time, known as dual-tasking. Nymbl is fully covered by your plan and is available at no cost to you.
